Press Release: Hope for Future Generations Marks International Day of Midwives, Celebrates the Lifesaving Role of Midwives.
Accra, Ghana – May 5, 2026 – Hope for Future Generations (HFFG) joins the global community in commemorating the International Day of Midwives, honouring the dedication, resilience, and invaluable contributions of midwives in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of mothers and newborns.
This year’s celebration is on the theme: “One Million More Midwives.” The theme calls for increased investment in training, recruitment, and retention of midwives to address the global shortage of skilled birth attendants and to ensure that every woman and newborn has access to quality care.
Midwives continue to serve as frontline health providers, offering essential care, guidance, and emotional support to women and families throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period, particularly in underserved communities.
In a statement to mark the day, HFFG acknowledged the unwavering commitment of midwives across Ghana and beyond, noting that their work is fundamental to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. The organisation emphasised that investing in midwifery is not only a health priority but a vital step towards achieving sustainable development and stronger health systems.
“Midwives are the backbone of maternal and newborn healthcare. Their expertise, compassion, and presence save lives every day. As we celebrate them, we must also renew our commitment to supporting their work through adequate training, resources, and recognition,” the statement said.
HFFG further called on government, stakeholders, and development partners to intensify efforts in strengthening midwifery services by improving working conditions, expanding access to essential medical supplies, and increasing community awareness on maternal health issues.
As part of its ongoing interventions, Hope for Future Generations continues to advocate for improved reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health services, while empowering communities with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed health decisions.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with partners to ensure that every woman has access to skilled care during pregnancy and childbirth, thereby securing a healthier future for generations to come.
Ayeekoo to all our dedicated midwives already on the field, risking their lives to bring forth new lives.
