Strengthening Community Systems to Scale-Up Community-led Response Intervention to End Neglected Tropical Diseases

Hope for Future Generations and its Implementing Partner Rural Watch, with technical support from the Ghana Health Service, are implementing the Strengthening Community Systems to Scale-Up Community-led Response Intervention to End Neglected Tropical Diseases in ten (10) districts in the Eastern Region of Ghana from February 2023 to January 2025.  The implementing districts include; Birim North, Birim South, Achiase Akyemansah, Denkyembour Kwaebibirm, Kwahu West, Lower Manya-Krobo and Okere Asuogyaman

General Objectives of Project 

1. Eradicating and eliminating skin-NTDs

2. Reducing skin-NTDs burden on both affected people and health systems

3. Improving planning, management and monitoring of health systems to fight skin-NTDs in an integrated manner

4. Improving accessibility, including economic accessibility, of people with skin-NTDs to health service

5. Improving access to water and sanitation services in skin-NTDs endemic areas

Project Achievement for 2023

1. Promoted early detection and management of skin NTD cases by training 40 volunteers in 10 districts to support active community case findings and linkage to care. These volunteers are coordinated by 10 trained nurses. 

2. Strengthened healthcare worker competencies by sensitizing 260 health care workers at the district and community levels on skin-NTD for proper identification of suspected cases in the communities.   

3. Ensuring NTD awareness among students by training 80 teachers and School Health Programme (SHEP) Coordinators in 8 districts to equip them with the knowledge to deliver information on skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) practices to students.

4. Sensitized 40 district and two Regional Environmental Health Officers to understand their role in preventing Neglected Tropical Diseases and improving accesss to water and sanitation services
