World NTD Day Celebration 2026

In commemoration of World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day, HFFG collaborated with the national, regional, and district stakeholders to enhance awareness, reduce stigma, and strengthen community action toward eliminating NTDs in Ghana.

On January 30, 2026, HFFG participated in the national celebration of World NTD Day at the Social Welfare School Park in Madina, under the global theme “Unite, Act, Eliminate.” Organized by the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health, the event attracted various participants, including government officials, development partners, traditional leaders, health workers, students, and community members.

HFFG showcased its NTD picture cards, highlighting the 5 skin NTDs, project activities, client support interventions, and community engagement efforts. The exhibition provided a platform to share field experiences and engage stakeholders on the impact of NTD interventions at the community level.

Goodwill messages from partners, including the World Health Organization, World Vision Ghana, Sightsavers, and WaterAid, emphasized the need for sustained investment, the integration of NTD services into primary health care and WASH systems, and enhanced community ownership.

The National NTD Ambassador, Dr. Joyce Aryeh, remarked, We need unity and decisive leadership at all levels to better support persons affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases, including ensuring that wound care services are covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, who reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to sustained collaboration and increased domestic financing to achieve NTD elimination.

Regional World NTD Day Celebration in Koforidua

On January 29, 2026, HFFG, in partnership with Rural Watch and the Eastern Regional Health Directorate, organized a radio talk show on Eastern FM in Koforidua. The program reached 968 listeners, educating them on the signs, symptoms, prevention, early reporting, and treatment of Neglected Tropical Diseases.

The discussion highlighted the importance of community participation, early health-seeking behavior, and supporting affected persons without discrimination. This radio engagement served as a platform to amplify NTD messaging across the Eastern region and reinforce the call for collective action.

School Sensitization in Akim Swedru

As part of district-level activities, school sensitization sessions were conducted in Akim Swedru within the Birim South District. A total of 262 pupils from Methodist and Presby Primary/JHS schools were educated on NTD signs and symptoms, personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, and reporting mechanisms. Students were encouraged to report suspected cases to the designated community volunteers.

 Church Sensitization in Ntronang

Church-to-church sensitization was also carried out in Ntronang in the Birim North District, reaching 128 congregants across Christ Apostolic, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches. These sessions focused on prevention, early reporting, stigma reduction, and community support for individuals affected by NTDs.

Through radio engagement, national advocacy, and grassroots sensitization in schools and churches, HFFG and its partners successfully strengthened awareness, renewed commitments, and deepened community participation in the fight against Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Eliminating NTDs is not only a public health goal; it is a vital step toward equity, dignity, and sustainable development for all.
